Abstract:
This research study aimed at determining the influence of the teaching methods on learners
acquisition of English competencies in Mumias West subcounty Kenya. It was guided by the
following objectives, to investigate the influence of the selected teaching technique in acquisition
of competencies in English language and literature, to determine how collaboration method,
contribute on acquisition of skills in English Language, to determine how activity based as a
teaching technique promote acquisition of English language skills, and to evaluate the
effectiveness of differential learning method in teaching of English language. The research also
used instruments such as questionnaire, an interview schedule and observation. Sampling
Techniques that were used were random sampling of learners. Stratified random sampling was
used to select teachers of English and the research deployed sample size of 161 respondents from
schools in Mumias West subcounty,Kakamega County.The research found that collaboration
method of learning was effective in achieving skills in English Language ,it was also found that
incorporating different methods like activity-based and differential learning also enhanced
achievement of English competencies. The study concluded that English teachers in Mumias
West incorporate different methods in teaching English including collaboration method which
they use oftenly and activity based which they use rarely.The study recommended use of
technology in teaching English and also reinforcement of the teaching methods to enhance the
four skills in English.
