Abstract:
There is limited attention given to the performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary
Education in public secondary schools in Sabatia sub county and the factors influencing
the same outcomes despite it being a concern. Furthermore, in Kenya there are few
empirical studies documented on the factors influencing academic performance in Sabatia
sub county hence bringing about this study which aimed to investigate the factors which
influence the academic performance in the pubic secondary schools in Sabatia sub
county, Vihiga county. Despite academic performance playing a crucial role in the
shaping of the future of the country as well as for individual development, the academic
performance of the learners in the sub county has been dropping. The research answered
3 questions on the extent to which: Teaching and learning materialist, school resources,
family background and the teaching strategies both contributes to the learner’s academic
performance. The study was carried out using descriptive research design. The research
targeted a population of teachers, head headteachers, students. A sample size of teachers,
headteachers and students. Both questionnaires, interviews and observation were the
methods used during the study after which the data was analyzed using the statistical
package for social sciences then the results summarized and presented in a table. The
findings from this study contributes to better understanding and backing up the little
available knowledge as the results is of great importance to educators, policymakers and
stakeholder’s yin the sub county. The data from this study is analyzed and interpreted
based on students and teachers’ response rate which has also been summarized,
conclusions made and recommendations given.
