Abstract:
This study investigated the influence of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) on
the teaching and learning process at Gretsa University, Kiambu County, Kenya.
The study evaluated content coverage, skill development, the impact of blended
learning, practical exposure, and learner-lecturer interactions, using a descriptive
survey design with data collected from 70 participants using a simple random
sampling technique and online surveys . Findings indicated that ODL enhanced
timely syllabus coverage, equipped learners with essential skills, promoted
flexibility and collaborative learning, and ensured access to quality education.
However, challenges such as limited interaction, outdated content, and insufficient
practical exposure were identified. Recommendations included designing
engaging and interactive ODL programs, providing recent examples to reflect
current trends, and establishing effective communication channels. Further
research was suggested to explore ODL's influence in other institutions to broaden
understanding and address challenges, ultimately fostering a positive attitude
toward its adoption and implementation.
