Abstract:
Education is an aspect which is very important to humans and as an input that leads to
development of the economy. This why the government of Kenya which is the founder of
education in the country really focuses on financing education each year. This is however the
concern on the quality of inputs of education offered and the output in terms of performance of
students especially in public secondary schools. The aim of this study was to find out the effects
of educational resources on academic performance of students in the selected public secondary
schools in Nyandarua North sub County. There were four study objectives that were formulated
and which they guided the study. The objectives were; to find out the effects of academic
performance, to examine the condition of available educational resources on academic
performance of students, to find out the level of impact of educational resources on academic
performance of students and to establish the relationship between the use of available
educational resources on academic performance of students in the selected public secondary
schools in Nyandarua North sub county. The study used descriptive research survey design and
data was collected using questionnaire method. The target population was 1670 which
comprised of principals, teachers and students in the selected public secondary schools in
Nyandarua North sub county. The study found out that there was a strong relationship between
academic performance and availability of educational resources. Additionally, accessibility of
resources for teaching and learning were linked to academic performance. While the school
availed resources such as textbooks, reference books, manillas, charts and photographs;
accessibility to library facilities, resource persons and field work exposure was wanting. The
findings of the study also established that while the school had provided classrooms, library and
toilets to the learners; the conditions were generally inadequate or poor. Classrooms were small
in relations to the numbers of students, had poor ventilations, and needed repair, while the
libraries were in need of modern learning materials. Therefore, government should allocate more
funds to equip facilities in schools which are completely lacking or inadequate, aid schools with
resource persons, field trips and excursions and also ICT facilities which are inadequate in most
schools.
