Language attrition is a natural phenomenon when individuals gradually lose their proficiency in a language they once knew. This study focused on the factors contributing to the attrition of standard Swahili among Gretsa University students in Kenya. The research aimed to provide valuable insights into language attrition and suggest ways to preserve and promote the language's use and significance. The first section of this research will provide an overview of the problem statement and research objectives. Language attrition is a prevalent phenomenon affecting individuals who have learned a second language, and its causes are still poorly understood. The research aimed to identify the factors contributing to the attrition of standard Swahili among Gretsa University students and suggest ways to address the problem. The second section aimed at highlighting the significance of the study. Standard Swahili is an essential language in Kenya and East Africa, and its gradual disappearance could have severe consequences for the country's cultural heritage and identity. The research aimed to provide valuable insights into the dynamics of language attrition and suggest ways to preserve and promote the use of standard Swahili among university students. The third section presented a literature review that highlights the theoretical framework and previous studies on language attrition. The literature review covered the main theories of language attrition. The review also discussed previous studies on language attrition and their findings. The fourth section involved the research methodology, including the research design, study population, data collection, and analysis. The research employed the use of a cross-sectional survey.The study population was Gretsa University students who have learned standard Swahili as a second language. Data collection involved questionnaires. Data analysis was both descriptive and inferential, using statistical software. The fifth section presents the results and discussion section, which included descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as a discussion of the findings. The results provided insights into the factors contributing to the attrition of standard Swahili, which is influenced by the language of instruction, attitude towards Swahili and the reading culture.Language of Instruction affects standard Swahili due to factors such as exposure to other languages, negative attitude, descline in reading culture and cultural influences, leading to diminished usage and fluency. The discussion suggested ways to address these factors, including the promotion of Swahili in schools and universities and the use of Swahili in daily life. The final section presented the conclusion and recommendations section, which summarizes the study's implications and offers recommendations for future research. The study's findings are expected to provide valuable insights into the factors contributing to the attrition of standard Swahili among university students in Kenya and inform efforts to preserve and promote the language's use and significance. Future research could explore the dynamics of language attrition in different regions and populations and suggest ways to address the problem.
