Abstract:
This study investigated the factors contributing to girl-child dropout in Narok East Sub-County, Narok
County, Kenya. The research employed descriptive survey research design. The descriptive survey
research design focused on analyzing information of the respondents on the determinants of girl child
dropout rate in secondary schools. To get the information, secondary school teachers, principals, education
officers, parents’ representatives and dropout students were interviewed during this period. The simple
random technique was used since it allowed all the respondents an equal and independent participation in
the research process. Test-retest method was used to test how reliable the information from the respondents
is. The conceptual framework indicated the factors that cause girl child dropout in secondary schools in
Narok East Sub-County, Narok, Kenya. The following findings were made; cultural factors, parents
education level and parents’ economic status greatly influence dropout rates among girls in Narok-east
sub-county. They are related in that, a girl from a low-income family with un-educated parents in a
community with strong cultural practices is at a very high risk of dropping out of school. The following
recommendations were made from the findings; Parents, education officers and teachers are not taking
any strict measures to curb girl child school dropout and that they should follow up on dropout girl’s and
offer guidance and counseling, organize campaigns to create awareness on how to retain the girl child in
school. The ministry of education should employ more female teachers in the area and promote them to
administrative positions to motivate the girl child into continuing with their education.
