Abstract:
The study investigated the effect of miraa (Khat) on secondary schools e.g. mixed secondary
school, boys’ secondary school and girls’ secondary school, in Gachoka constituency in Embu
County. Miraa farming and chewing is one cause of indiscipline among secondary student. Various
studies on the effect of miraa have been carried out worldwide. Miraa is a drug that is commonly
used by people. Currently, Meru senator, Kathuri Murungi is set to table amendment bill seeking
to remove miraa from classification of narcotic drug. In Gachoka constituency in Embu county
miraa is commonly grown and used by people hence making this study essential. The objectives
of the study were to identify the effect of chewing miraa on school dropout, to investigate the
impact of chewing and plantation of miraa on school performance and to find how the chewing of
miraa affect learners mentally. This study was limited to Gachoka constituency. The study
employed a descriptive survey. A random sample was done of three secondary school in Gachoka
constituency. Administering questionnaires to the student, teachers and interview was carried out
randomly on the farmers in Gachoka constituency. The data was collected and analyzed,Test
Retest method was carried out to confirm the reliability of the instrument. According to study
findings, all the tested independent variable had a significant impact on students performance. The
study therefore recommended for further studies in other schools in Embu.
